Unbelievable…Did You Know Your Rug Is Able To Hold Up To 10 Lbs. Of Soil?
Mar 13 2017 | By: Hernandez Carpet Cleaning
You may have heard advice like “wait as long as possible before cleaning your rug” or “a rug is never the same after it’s cleaned.”
Those myths usually come from experiences with improper cleaning methods. In the past, some cleaners used harsh chemicals or incorrect techniques that caused rapid re-soiling or fiber damage. When cleaned properly, however, professional rug washing actually extends the life of your rug.
In fact, manufacturers recommend professional cleaning at least every 12 months. Avoiding regular cleaning can lead to permanent fiber damage.
Your Rug Is a Filter
Many homeowners don’t realize that a rug acts like a filter inside your home. It traps dry soil, dust, and debris that would otherwise circulate through your indoor air.
Even if you vacuum regularly, there is always more dry soil embedded deep within the foundation of the rug — especially in wool rugs. Over time, this grit settles at the base of the fibers and can act like sandpaper, causing premature wear.
That’s why proper dust removal is critical.
Proper Care for Your Oriental Rug
-
Rotation
To ensure even wear, rotate your rug once a year. In high-traffic areas, rotation may be needed every 6–12 months. -
Vacuuming
Oriental rugs should be vacuumed regularly to remove surface dirt and restore life to the fibers. Avoid vacuuming the fringe with a beater bar. Instead, use the hose attachment from a canister vacuum. -
Padding
A quality rug pad protects against wear, reduces dirt accumulation underneath, and prevents slipping. -
Professional In-Plant Cleaning
Oriental and loose-woven rugs should not be cleaned the same way as wall-to-wall carpet. In-plant rug washing allows for specialized dusting, multiple cleaning treatments, controlled drying, and tools that are not available during in-home cleaning.
Can You Dust a Rug at Home?
For smaller rugs, you can remove a surprising amount of dry soil yourself. The traditional method still works: take the rug outside, hang it over a railing or line, and gently beat it to loosen embedded dust. You’ll likely be amazed at how much comes out.
However, larger rugs, valuable wool rugs, and delicate hand-knotted rugs require specialized equipment. At our plant, we use professional dusting systems designed to safely vibrate and release deep-seated dry soil before washing. This prevents dirt from turning into mud during cleaning and allows for a much more thorough wash.
If you're unsure what your rug needs, we’re happy to inspect it and guide you in the right direction.
