In-Home Rug Cleaning vs In-Plant Rug Cleaning: What is the Difference?
Mar 26 2026 | By: Hernandez Carpet Cleaning
That rug might look beautiful… but if it smells, feels heavy, or hasn’t been cleaned in years, it could be holding pounds of deep dirt and bacteria.
Maybe there was a spill at your last gathering or your pet had an accident.
Now you’re wondering: Can you clean it at home? Should you? Or could that actually make it worse especially if you have hardwood floors underneath?
Let’s break down the real difference between in-home rug cleaning and in-plant rug cleaning and which one your rug actually needs.
In-home rug cleaning
Performed at your home for maintenance cleaning and light refreshes. Best for rugs that are in good condition and do not have strong odors or deep contamination. It typically includes pre-treatment, deep cleaning with professional equipment, and deodorizing.
It’s ideal for maintenance cleaning and light refreshes.
In-plant rug cleaning
Performed at our rug cleaning facility for a deeper, more controlled clean. This is the recommended method for most oriental and specialty rugs. Depending on the rug’s material, condition, and level of contamination, we use different cleaning approaches within our plant, including:
-
Standard wash cleaning – after thorough dusting, we apply pre-treatment, gently clean the rug, and rinse it to remove soil and buildup
-
Low-moisture cleaning – for delicate or moisture-sensitive rugs that cannot handle a full wash
-
Immersion cleaning (tub wash) – for rugs with strong odors, pet accidents, or heavy contamination that require deep flushing
Every rug is evaluated before cleaning to determine the safest and most effective method.
This allows us to clean each rug using the right process for that rug, rather than a one-size-fits-all method.

This allows for a much deeper clean—especially for odor removal, pet accidents, and heavily soiled rugs.
If you have hardwood or laminate floors, in-plant cleaning is often the better option. Because we must limit moisture during in-home cleaning on these surfaces, the results may not be as deep as what can be achieved at our facility.
With in-plant rug cleaning, you also have the option to schedule pickup and delivery. Prefer to drop it off? We offer discounted pricing for drop-offs.
If your rug is under heavy furniture, we can assist with moving it as part of the process. We just ask that you remove any breakables, electronics, or small items beforehand and remain present while furniture is being moved.
When is in-home cleaning enough?
In-home rug cleaning works well when your rug needs a general refresh rather than a full restoration.
If your rug is under furniture, don’t let that be the only reason you choose in-home cleaning. We can help with that.
At Hernandez Carpet Cleaning, we assist with moving furniture as part of the service so the rug can be properly cleaned underneath. We’ll also place everything back once the cleaning is complete.
If your rug needs a deeper clean, we can pick it up, clean it at our facility, and return it once it’s ready.
In-home cleaning is best when:
-
You’re looking for a maintenance or refresh clean
-
The rug is in good overall condition
-
There are no strong odors or deep contamination
When should you choose in-plant cleaning?
In-plant cleaning is the better option when your rug needs a deeper, more controlled clean.
A common situation we see is when someone has purchased a rug used or from a vintage store, or even inherited a rug from family. These rugs may look fine on the surface, but they can smell or appear dull from years of dust and buildup hidden deep within the fibers.
Another common issue is pet-related odors or accidents. You might notice the smell gets stronger on humid or rainy days, then fades again. This is a sign the problem is deep in the rug and needs a full wash to properly remove it.
Less commonly, but still important, are rugs affected by water damage or leaks. Local restoration companies bring these rugs to us often because proper washing and controlled drying can’t be done effectively in the home.
In-plant cleaning is recommended when:
-
The rug was purchased used or from a vintage store
-
It’s an heirloom or passed-down rug
-
It hasn’t been cleaned in years
-
There are pet accidents or recurring odors
-
Odors get stronger during humidity or rain
-
The rug has been affected by a water leak or moisture issue
Our Rug Cleaning Process
At our facility, we follow a detailed multi-step process designed to safely remove deep soil, odors, and buildup while protecting your rug’s fibers.
While each rug is different, our process typically includes:
-
Inspection & pickup/drop-off to assess fiber type and condition
-
Deep dust removal to eliminate embedded dry soil
-
Pre-treatment & spot cleaning for stains and heavy buildup
-
Controlled washing and rinsing based on the rug’s material
-
Proper drying in a controlled environment to prevent damage
-
Final grooming and inspection before delivery

Some rugs also require extra care depending on how they’re made and understanding that difference is important, which brings us to the next question.
Why some rugs require specialized washing
Not all rugs can be cleaned the same way. The material, dyes, and construction all affect how a rug should be treated. Using the wrong method can lead to bleeding, shrinkage, texture damage, or permanent discoloration.
That’s why choosing the right team matters. At Hernandez Carpet Cleaning, our process is handled and overseen by trained rug technicians who understand how to properly clean different materials and constructions.
Specialized Rug Cleaning is needed when:
-
Older or vintage rug (50+ years old)
-
Hand-woven or Oriental rug
-
Rug made with natural dyes (can bleed)
-
High-value or designer rug
-
Custom or irreplaceable rug
-
Treated rug (fire-retardant, moth-proofed, etc.)
-
Rug made from uncommon or delicate materials, such as:
-
Silk
-
Viscose or rayon
-
Cowhide or sheepskin
-
Bamboo slat rugs
These rugs often require low-moisture methods, specialized solutions, and controlled drying to protect their structure and appearance.
